What is ‘Mental Health’ or ‘Mental Disorder' or ‘Mental Illness’?

Briefly, the question above refers to a wide range of mental health conditions that affect mood, emotion, thinking, perception, organization, identity, personality and behaviour. These conditions can include disorders like depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, eating disorders, ADHD and addictive behaviours. I should add that the umbrella of mental health conditions has widened. Essentially, it can cause distress and may impair one's ability to function in daily life, but, with proper diagnosis, treatment and support, many people with mental health issues can recover or manage their condition effectively.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) contains more than 70 disorders and thousands of symptoms!

What are the determinants of Mental Health?

We all have different neuro-biological set up, coping strategies, genetics, learning, upbringing, lifestyles, social and structural determinants that influence our vulnerability to mental illness. In todays world there are also other unfavourable dynamics that are outside of our control, including unemployment/income, housing, debt, weather conditions, interest rates, war/violence, and living in deprived neighbourhood to name a few. Deprivation also increases the risk of experiencing mental health conditions.

When should I seek Mental Health Care and Treatment?

Mental health is just as important as physical health, and seeking help when needed is a sign of strength, not weakness. Each individual will display their signs and symptoms differently. There are also age related differences between child and adult.

There are common denominators and biological symptoms e.g. in depression or ADHD. I also want to include the risk of self harm, and the threat of suicide here. We can observe the overt behaviours, but not the covert ones.

You should seek help if you are not coping or facing challenges with self-care, relationships, in your role, employment, occupational activities, routine or feel that you have been derailed.

Empowering Lives with ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects millions, yet it’s often misunderstood. ADHD is a neurological condition that impacts focus, behaviour, and self-regulation. Symptoms vary from inattentiveness and impulsivity to hyperactivity, often making everyday tasks a challenge. This can affect children, teens, and adults alike, each facing unique challenges at different life stages.

Common ADHD symptoms include difficulty concentrating, frequent distractions, forgetfulness, and impulsivity. Identifying these signs early helps in seeking effective treatments and support. Symptoms can differ widely, with some people experiencing primarily inattentive symptoms, while others might show more hyperactive or combined symptoms.

Effective treatment options for ADHD include medication, behavioural therapy, and lifestyle adjustments. A personalized treatment plan created with a medical professional can make a world of difference. The goal is not only to manage symptoms but to help individuals thrive, build confidence, and lead fulfilling lives.

ADHD isn’t limited to children; many adults also live with ADHD. Adult ADHD symptoms include difficulties with time management, organization, and relationship challenges. Proper diagnosis and treatment can lead to substantial improvements in managing professional and personal responsibilities. Many adults find therapy, coaching, and support groups valuable for skill-building and social support.
